LONDON SEWERS

The new Victorian network of sewers required massive pumping facilities to bring the sewage up to river level so that it could be discharged into the falling tide of the Thames. There were two pumping stations each with four steam driven beam engines capable of shifting 60 tons of sewage per minute. This engine, now electric, demonstrates the operation of the system.
