IMPROVED USE OF THE LAND

Over thousands of years large areas of East Anglia were lost to agriculture because of incursion by the sea. Known as the Fens the area was extensively drained over two centuries releasing highly fertile soil for increased food production for the rapidly increasing population. The soil was peaty and shrank making it necessary to install these small wind operated pumps to allow water to be continually pumped up to the drainage channels.
