CHARCOAL

Much of the wood used in charcoal production came from coppicing, an ancient process whereby trees were cut back to ground level and they then regrew with long straight branches. This tree is in a grove in Epping Forest where coppicing was abandoned many decades ago allowing the trunk to reform.
