SKELLIG MICHAEL
This small remote island off the south west coast of Kerry was the desolate home for a small community of monks for several hundred years. Living in these tiny beehive huts made from local stone they survived the loneliness and isolation with their faith and a subsistence diet of fish, eggs and homegrown vegetables.
" Let the monk live in a community under the discipline of one
father and in company with many,…..Let him come weary to
his bed and sleep walking, and let him be forced to rise while
his sleep is not yet finished."
