UNDERGROUND/OVERGROUND

London was the first city in the world to develop an underground rail service. Opening in 1863, the system was gradually developed and extended to its current length of 250 miles and 45% below the surface, carrying one billion passengers each year. In the outer suburbs the service is largely overground, as here at Leyton, in East London. As it crosses the Meridian we can see that many of its users are ethnically diverse reflecting the complex make up of the population of London and indeed much of the UK.
